Is Coach still popular?

I have absolutely no fashion sense at all and I'm looking to get my girlfriend a gift or two. She has some Coach handbags, but they are kind of old. So I'm wondering: is Coach still "in" or is there a new trendier brand of handbag? I know LV is a big name, but a little out of my price range. Anything from the lady yahoo'ers would be appreciated
